Threading is slow, fiddly work for small fingers. Saying a name with every bead turns that effort into something warm.

Step by step

1. 1

   Choose the beads

   One for each friend. Count them out loud.

2. 2

   Name them

   Say who each bead is for as you pick it up.

3. 3

   Thread them

   Slowly. The cord goes in, the bead comes down.

4. 4

   Hang it up

   A grown-up ties a loop at each end and hangs it on the wall or the door — never around the neck.
